To eat...or not to eat

The food industry and I are no longer friends. I've been purchasing fresh baked bread at Big Sky Bread Company instead of the supermarket because it only has five ingredients, unlike the bread you can buy at the store. I love their bread and feel so healthy when I eat it (everyday). Their granola is also amazing. If you haven't been, you need to visit immediately and try their granola. I hear their cookies are also good, but I haven't tried them.

Anyway, this week I decided to buy bread at Panera to test out the difference. The first thing I noticed is that the Honey Wheat bread looks like white bread. It seemed a little strange, and the ingredients say they use whole wheat, but still I thought it a little odd. Until I read the other five hundred and seventy five thousand ingredients. No wonder it looks white with all that other junk they add in there. AND it doesn't taste as good. It's too fluffy for toast and not dense and hearty like the yummy Big Sky bread.

Do I sound like a food snob? It's because I am. I am so tired of the food industry putting so many extra ingredients in their foods that are NOT NEEDED. Five ingredients for bread is enough. It tastes great that way! AND even though Big Sky claims their bread lasts for seven days without the added preservatives, I found it can last even longer. Ha! Take that preservatives!

But my frustration did not end there. I proceeded to look at other nutritional information for the goodies at Panera. Healthy smelthy. Their blueberry scone has 15 grams of fat, which is probably normal for a scone. It also contains a truck-load of sugar. I thought maybe looking at the pumpkin muffin would ease my anger. Instead it increased it even more...which is why I'm writing this post. I make some delicious pumpkin muffins at home...with whole wheat flour and maple syrup instead of sugar, and no oil. They are yummy and not loaded with fat and A TON of sugar like the muffins at Panera.

Why can't the food industry cook like I do??? It's not any harder to make the recipes more healthy and yet they think the consumer likes it better loaded with fat and sugar. We wouldn't notice the difference it they made their recipes healthier!!! We would still consume them and be less overweight for it.

Thank you Panera for ruining my image of you. Sigh. Thank you Big Sky for making yummy, DELICIOUS, healthy bread. No longer will I stray from your ways.

I have often thought about why eateries make obscene portion sizes and fill their food with insane amounts of calories as well. Let’s open a restaurant with perfect portions and all food items will be under 600 calories. Panera is one of the worst places to eat caloriewise EVER! But I do love their turkey artichoke sandwich. Thank goodness I only eat out once ever 3-4 months. Just home cooking in this house.
