A Visit!

This weekend our friend, April, came to visit from Dallas. Here she is holding sweet Mira.

Aren't they cute?? April is expecting her first little one in July and we can't wait to meet him! April and I went to college together and became good friends during our Freshman year. We did crazy ridiculous things like dump cold water on each other's heads in the shower, stay up late painting our nails, and drawing with paint pens on our carpet. We did a few other things as well that probably shouldn't be mentioned on the blog. I do remember the time April tried to doe-si-doe with me in the lobby of the dorms. Quite awkward! I couldn't stop laughing. Anyway, it's fun to see how times have changed and now we're married and having kids. Good thing we're a little more mature now.

We also visited our friends Brandon, Sherry, Stella, Harper, and Atticus a few weeks ago. Here is a pic of Sherry, Stella, and Harper with Mira.

Ok, so I need some advice from the moms out there. I'm a little confused about this whole napping thing. Well, I'm not confused, but Mira seems to not understand that the morning nap should last longer than 20-30 minutes. I've read some of Babywise and some of Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. They recommend in that book that the baby be put to bed every night around 6:30 or 7:00 even if they are wide awake, and they say it's okay to let them cry for 45 minutes. I'm not down with the crying for 45 minutes. Not cool in my book. Anyway, we're sort of trying the putting her down at 7:00 thing. Last night she slept from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm, so she was technically down at 7:00. Of course she woke up to eat, which is perfectly normal and fine. But after that she was obviously awake. She seemed a little sleepy, but we've been dealing with some reflux which makes her pretty upset. That was the issue last night. She was calm and content and then all of a sudden would have reflux and get really upset. Poor sweet thing. We have a prescription we're giving her twice a day, but some days the reflux still happens. So, all that to say, I'm trying what the book says and of course it's only been two days, but I really want her to start sleeping longer than 20-30 minutes in the morning! Any advice from my fellow moms???? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey, friend! Just a couple thoughts (one for the reflux, the other for the sleeping):
--Have you elevated one end of her mattress (or whatever it is she's sleeping in)? We bought a wedge at Target that you can put under one end that elevates her head so her reflux won't be as much of a bother.

--We decided against the whole Babywise method for J.J....not because we think it's wrong or right...I just know I'm not NEARLY structured enough to be that scheduled for my kid. When he woke up to eat, I fed him and then I laid him back down (though I always tried not to let him fall asleep while nursing). But he did go through a stage when he was pretty little that he took a really short morning nap and a longer afternoon one and then one in the evening. He didn't really sleep all the way through the night until he was 4 months old, but that's because I didn't make him...once I decided he could, I moved him to his crib, let him cry it out for 3 nights and then he was good to go. But he also didn't need to eat in the middle of the night anymore, either, which is why I waited (that and our room is on the complete opposite side of the house as his and I was NOT going to get up and walk that far in the middle of the night to feed him).

WHEW! That was long! Sorry! Hope it helped though!

I wish I had advice to give! Silas was 4 months old when we started him on his schedule..... We did do babywise in the beginning and although we don't read much about it now for his age range, I will say.... He goes down well for his 2 naps...sleep at least 2 hours both naps and goes to bed at 730-800 and sleeps all night. I don't know if that is attributed to Baby Wise or just a good sleepin' boy. :)

I hope we can get together this week..or weekend...or next week.

hi Gina,
we follow babywise, although kinda loosely. Maybe more "babywise lite". :) Anyway, first I would say you might want to figure out how much she is already sleeping over the course of 24 hours. If she's taking many naps like the 4-8 one you mentioned, that may be why she's only sleeping a little at the morning nap. I just always have in my mind the babywise premise of eat, awake, asleep. So since Will eats 6 times a day, he sleeps some in every feed/wake cycle, making lots of naps and then bedtime. Some naps are just about 45 minutes when he is awake longer, others are more like an hour and a half. Eventually he'll phase out to a morning, afternoon and early evening nap and they'll all be more on the long end (except the evening one, that always seems shorter with my kids). I am not sure this is answering your question. Come by for a visit anytime and we can talk baby (:
